Endoscopy Procedures

Dr Magnus Halland performs endoscopic procedures, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy, at Ramsey Surgical Centre at Charlestown and at Lingard Day Centre in Newcastle.

Dr Halland has been performing endoscopic procedures since 2011 and is committed to quality and safety in endoscopy. He has been recognised by the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Endoscopy for both gastroscopy and colonoscopy since 2014. He is also up to date with colonoscopic recertification, a process that monitors quality, safety, and accuracy in colonoscopy performance.

Dr Halland performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including:

• Gastroscopy, with or without oesophageal dilation
• Colonoscopy
• Therapeutic colonoscopy with removal of small and large polyps
• Wireless pH capsule placement, also known as the BRAVO procedure

The BRAVO procedure allows for accurate assessment of reflux disease without the need for a catheter, or tube, through the nose. Dr Halland is among a select group of endoscopists in Australia who perform this procedure.

Dr Halland also offers a Direct-to-Procedure pathway for selected patients, including patients with a positive faecal occult blood test, to help facilitate timely access to endoscopy where appropriate.

He also provides specialised treatment for oesophageal strictures, or narrowing of the food pipe. In selected patients with particularly refractory strictures, endoscopic dilation may be followed by a self-dilation program. Patients are taught how to safely pass a dilator at home, which can reduce the need for repeated endoscopic procedures.

While at Mayo Clinic, Dr Halland also participated in endoscopic research trials evaluating emerging technologies, including novel polyp-detection systems and oesophageal motility assessment tools such as EndoFLIP.
