Services at Newcastle Gastroenterology
The practice offers three main services:
GI Consultation, Endoscopy and GI Physiology Laboratory Tests.

GI Consultation
Dr Magnus Halland consults on and manages a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, with a subspecialty focus on oesophageal and motility disorders. He has published extensively in this field and has particular expertise in the assessment and management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, eosinophilic oesophagitis, achalasia, swallowing disorders, and other suspected gastrointestinal motility disorders.
Dr Halland also sees patients with general gastroenterological conditions. For a full list of consultation types and associated fees, please see the Appointments and Fees page.
Dr Halland reserves appointments for urgent consultations and can generally see urgent patients within one week, where clinically appropriate.
Endoscopy Procedures
Dr Magnus Halland performs endoscopic procedures including gastroscopy and colonoscopy. He has been performing endoscopic procedures since 2011 and is committed to quality and safety in endoscopy. He performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including oesophageal dilation, placement of wireless pH capsules, and colonoscopic removal of small and large polyps.
Dr Halland also offers a Direct-to-Procedure pathway for selected patients, including patients with a positive faecal occult blood test, to help facilitate timely access to procedures where appropriate.

GI Physiology Laboratory
Dr Halland operates the only private GI Physiology Laboratory in Newcastle and the Hunter region. The laboratory uses modern high-resolution equipment comparable to the systems used at Mayo Clinic in the United States.
Dr Halland has subspecialty fellowship training and extensive experience in oesophageal and gastrointestinal motility disorders, including the interpretation of complex motility and reflux studies. Patients do not need private health insurance to undergo testing in the GI Physiology Laboratory.
